The great Billy Liddell played his first game for Liverpool in a game we lost 1-0 to Preston North End in a friendly at Anfield. It was billed as a “Grand Match”.
Billy went on to make 534 appearances for Liverpool scoring 228 times. He was part of the 1946/47 League Winners squad during his spell.
Despite being one of the best footballers of his time Billy chose to stay loyal to Liverpool even when they were a mediocre mid table team who ended up being relegated into Division Two in the 1950s.
When you spoke to the ‘auld fellas’ they always say Billy was the best they ever saw.
